7 Thu 23/2 NARVIK (Norway) 0800hrs 2000hrs Despite being north of the Arctic Circle, Narvik offers year-round ice-free access to the Norwegian Sea.   Originally called Victoriahavn after the Queen of England, it is an important Norwegian port on a deep-water fjord and was the scene of epic naval and land action in the last war.   In winter, Narvik tempts you with wild, dramatic and beautiful Arctic experiences such as the Northern Lights.

We had no excursions planned for Narvik, just as well as the weather not good. Tony, on our dining table, being a cable car enthusiast went anyway.   He reported that once you got above the weather, it was fine and the views were spectacular.   We didn't go in to town as we were docked some way from the centre, but there was a shuttle bus laid on.

We just stayed on the ship and had a lazy day; though by the time you have been for your meals, been to the two quizzes, done the daily Sudokus and crosswords it is nearly time for bed anyway.   As it snowed, Carol went out and tried the tip from Brian Ford of using the flash to bring out the snowflakes.

Leaving Narvik, I had a suspicion that we would cut through one of the sounds, rather than go all the way round the Lofoten Islands, so we kept a watch on the ships course on the navigation channel on the TV.   Sure enough we saw it swing from SW to NW.   We were just waiting to see North come up to confirm this as they announced a sighting of the Northern Lights.   The foredeck on deck 10 was getting full by the time we got up there, but we managed a position on the starboard rails near the back.   At 10:00 they announced that it had ended and people began to drift off.   We decided to stay up there and took up a position with our backs against the forward cabin walls.   After a while the lights started up again on the port, mostly at around 45 degrees above the horizon, but one streak that went really high into the sky.   They were still going when they disappeared behind a mountain but we could see the glow over the top.   They faded away before they came out the other side, so we came back in.   They made a later announcement at around 12:00 but we had gone to bed and didn't bother to get up again.
