[ back to Fire & Ice   back to Nanortolik]

Sunday Aug 14, Nanortalik, Greenland

left hand panorama middle panorama right hand panorama After breakfast we did some more scenic photography and I attempted a panorama.   There are three overlapping panoramas that cover about 120 degrees in total.   Click on one of the panels of the thumbnail image to bring up the panorama.   If your cursor shows a plus sign in a circle, Firefox has resized the image down to your page width.   Click on the image to show it full size and scroll left or right to see it all.   We thought that Qaqortoq had wonderful scenery, but Nanortalik is even better, you get very good views of some impressive mountains (if the weather is fine).

I was having trouble with walking so Carol went off photographing and I stayed in the main square just watching life go by.   There were several birds flitting around but I had left my binoculars on board so I snapped them with my telephoto so I could identify them later.   Hand held at that magnification will not give a sharp image but this one can still be recognised as a wheatear, a passage migrant to us at home.   There was a large carved whale on which some children were playing, lost in their make-believe.   It reminded me of when, as youngsters, we used to climb the young elms in the park and pretend we were in the rigging of schooners.

We missed the folk dancing and Kaffe-mik as we couldn't find where it was.   In the end we found out from someone who had been there and we arrived just in time for the last piece of cake as they were closing up.   We did see some of the boating events as they were easy to find.   As you can see they were appreciated too.   All the ports we went to seemed to make an effort to promote their place for tourism, but for me Nanortalik out did them all.
