Our guide said our ship was too big to get in to the
harbour. I think we could have done that, but we were certainly too
big for the dock. For whatever reason we stayed outside in the loch,
so the tender journey was quite long. The tower is a folly on the way
in to the harbour that was abandoned before completion.
I thought the excursion title was just a name for the tour and we
would have a trip around the environs of Oban, and catch a glimpse of the
mounatains. However we went quite a way inland, on a large circular
tour of the Scotish highlands including
Glen Coe, admitedly we
only saw a small part of the highlands, but giving a good impression of tbe
glens with the moutains on either side. For the most part the roads
skirt round the mountains, but we did cross over via
Ranoch Moor to the
next loch, Loch Linnhe
(the one we were berthed in). On the way back we stopped for refreshments
at the Ballachulisch Hotel.
The image is of the bridge linking North and South Ballachulisch. If you
are not familiar with the Scotish highlands then this excursion gives you a very
good taster. We definitely want to come back, but perhaps by car next time.
