As we had not booked a trip here (the town is in easy walking distance) we let the excursion rush go and
took our time. We left the ship in the early afternoon. There were a couple of
spits of rain so Carol took a brolly, I just had a coat. Our plan was to visit the fish
market with our cameras. Along the way we passed the famous wooden Hanseatic houses.
These front on to Brygen (the road along the harbour) and are accessed from alley-ways that run up to the next
road. Because they are close together they are not easy to photograph. Another problem
is that people are continually passing through these alleys and so it is difficult to find a moment when they
are not cluttered.
Bergen then
lived up to its reputation and it began to rain properly. The fish market is at the end of
Brygen, and runs across the width of the harbour. If you go left instead of right you come to
the station for the funicular railway that runs up to Mount Fløyen, (seen here in a telephoto shot
taken earlier from the ship). By the time we got to the fish market we were soaked, putting a
damper on things. We wandered around the stalls for a bit, but with everyone using the stalls
as cover from the rain it was a bit crowded. The cafes were full, so with nowhere to shelter we
decided to go baxk to the ship. We looked for a taxi with no luck, so we got the
bus back to the ship. You can see our route on my GPS track.
We had only been back about half an hour when the rain stopped.
This picture looks down the harbour to the fish market which you can't see, but it is in front of the big
square building where we caught the bus back. The Hanseatic houses are on the left opposite the
ferries on the right.
