Bergen was founded in 1070 by Olav the Good and was used by the Vikings in their voyages of exploration, trade and war.   It was also a major trading center for the Hanseatic League.   In was the home of the famous composer Edvard Grieg in the 19th century.

The city retains much of its 18th- and 19th-century charm with the famous wooden buildings of the Brygen.   There is a tradition that it always rains in Bergen, but we have been lucky with nice sunny weather there.   Even when it does rain it is a fascinating place.
