Greenock lies at the mouth of the River Clyde, where it widens out into the Firth of Clyde, which leads up to Glasgow.   In mediaeval times it was important for fishing, but during the industrial revolution developed along with Glasgow so that there is industry and connurbaton all along the banks of the Clyde (not to be confused with Clydebank).
