Luleå is a city on the coast of northern Sweden at the top of the gulf of Bothnia, and the capital of Norrbotten County, the northernmost county in Sweden.  Luleå has about 75,000 inhabitants and is the seat of Luleå Municipality (with a total population of 75,921).  It has the seventh biggest harbor in Sweden for shipping goods.  It has a large steel industry and is a center for extensive research.  Luleå University of Technology is one of Swedenés three technology universities and the northernmost university in Sweden.

Explore this pretty town and see the 19th-century cathedral which is still the tallest building.  The port here is ice-bound until the end of May, and from here you can head into the Arctic Circle (overland) to see how the long hours of daylight transform the landscape and learn about the Sami, or reindeer people, who live here.  You also have the opportunity to visit Boden Fortress, one of Sweden´s largest military constructions.

The port of Luleå is located on a peninsula at the mouth of the Lule River, where it enters the Gulf of Bothnia and is exposed to the full force of the northerly winds.  Sometimes called the ´metropolis of the north´, Gustavus Adolphus originally founded the town seven miles further upriver in 1621 and it was moved to its present site in 1649.  In 1887 Luleå was devastated by a fire, which destroyed many of its public buildings: the neo-Gothic Cathedral, dating from 1893, is still the town´s tallest building.  The iron ore mined at Gellivara is exported through Luleå and there are smelting works at nearby Karlsvik.  The port also exports timber, which is floated down the Lule River in large quantities.

There are plenty of shops in central Luleå, open Monday to Friday from 1000-1800, and on Saturday between 1000-1400.  The post office is located at Storgatan 34 and is open Monday to Friday from 0800-1900 and at weekends from 1000-1600.  There is a tourist office located at 17 Skeppsbrogatan which is open Monday to Friday from 1000-1900 and at weekends from 1000-1600.
