Mariehamn (Finnish: Maarianhamina), the town of a thousand Linden trees, is the capital of the Åland archipelago (an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty) with pretty wooden houses from the late-19th century, a picturesque waterfront, and a museum ship.  You might like to visit the Stallhagen Brewery to sample Ålandic beer, or join a guided hike of the hills of Getaberget for fabulous coastal views.  Like all of Åland, Mariehamn is unilingually Swedish-speaking and around 88% of the inhabitants speak it as their native language.  Forty percent of the population of Åland live in the city

Åland is a beautiful archipelago with over 6,500 islands, often referred to the ´Islands of Peace´. Mariehamn was established in 1861 by the Russian Tsar Alexander II and named after his wife, Maria.  When you sail into the Western Harbour, you will see the Pommern, a four-masted sailing ship built on the Clyde in 1903, which was in use until the Second World War. It sailed on the wheat route between Australia and England, and is now preserved as a museum ship.  Mariehamn is a pedestrian-friendly town with plenty of cultural attractions and sights to visit.  Their architectural style shows both Imperial Russian and Scandinavian National influences.

Souvenir and craft shops are found on Torggatan.  Most shops are open from Monday to Friday between 0800-1900, and on Saturday between 1200-1800.  The post office is situated at Nygatan 6 and is open Monday to Friday 0900-1700 and Saturday 1030-1330.  There are banks on Torggatan. Open from Monday to Friday between 0900-1600; closed at weekends but 24-hour ATMs are available.  A desk with tourist information is available at the Cruise Terminal.
