Riga is the capital of the Republic of Latvia and the geographical centre of the Baltic States.   The city has always been well placed for trade between Western and Eastern Europe which has come to the fore since liberation from the third Reich and Stalinist Russia.   Tourism is now a big part of the economy but commercial trade is still important.
