Wikipedia lies at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland, the eastern arm of the Baltic Sea.   It is at the mouth of the River Neva which leads through to Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe, and the 14th largest lake by area in the world, (Wikipedia).   St Petersburg, named after Peter the Great (also formerly known as Leningrad and Petrograd), is the main reason that Baltic cruises are so popular, it is one of the highest on the "must see" list, for good reason.   If you visit the Peterhof via coach, (either there or back, one way is usually by boat), then you can contrast how the rich lived and how the poor, that supported them, lived, they are still living in the same wooden houses.   It opens your eyes to the real Russia.

There is a lot of confusion about the Visa situation in Russia.   You do not normally need one, see here.

The following recommendation was emailed to me by Brian Schweitzer (ex Pat) who has lived in St Petersburg for 13+ years.   When his mother came to visit him from the US he used Dancing Bear Tours as they were highly rated on TripAdvisor.   He reports that they had a great experience.
