Tromso on our own

We had checked with the tourist office before we came that the War Museum would be open from 12:00, so we had a leisurely breakfast after the morning rush and then caught the shuttle into town.   We already knew that we needed the 28 bus, so we just checked with the tourist office (next to the shuttle stop) where the 28 bus stop was.   It was a two or three minute walk just round the corner.

We just missed one, but only had about twenty minutes to wait for the next one.   The driver told us when we got to the right stop and we got off.   Do you remember when Cary Grant got of the bus in North by North West.   The bus went off down the road and he was left standing in the middle of nowhere, completely deserted.   Well it was a bit like that for us.   We found the museum was a large shed on one side of the road that was padlocked and a few exhibits on the other side of the road in a fenced off area (but the gate was open).   There was a search-light, an 88 mm anti-aircraft gun, and what looked like a mortar launcher.   We decided to go back to the main town and caught the same bus (same driver) on his way back.   We told the information office in case anyone else asked about the museum and they refunded us our bus fare, so we got a free tour of most of the 28 route.

When we were here earlier in the year we did the Panoramic Tromso tour.   We found this an excellent introduction to the city and what it had to offer, see my blog entry.   The map on the right shows our trip out to the War Museum but I would recommend that if you want to go here you contact the museum direct first to make sure they will actually be open.   The published opening times are not enough.   While Carol was talking to the Tourist Office when we got back I snapped this advert for one of our Artists.   He is a big favourite with Carol especially since he got into art on the I-pad which she is now doing.   I noticed that some people elected to walk in to town from the dock.   It is possible if you are very fit, but is not very scenic.   In my view it is better to spend the money on the shuttle, it seems long enough on that.   The shuttle bus stops right by the tourist office as you can see on the detail map at the top of this page.
