Southampton port information

Southampton is a major port in the mid south of England.  It is situated at the top of Southampton Water which runs in to the Solent which separates the Isle of Wight from the rest of England.

Southampton and Liverpool have competed over the years as the main passenger port.  Liverpool, which grew up on the slave trade, became the immigration port and had the Cunard head offices.  After the war cheap airline flights, knocked out the cruising business but Southampton hung on as the transatlantic port with the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.  Although flying is still popular with some the airport security hassle is a big deterrent and cruising is making a comeback.  Liverpool has reentered the ring as a cruise destination with a grant from the government.  When they started offering turnround to cruise lines Southampton objected that it was unfair competition as it had been subsidised.  They conveniently ignored their own grant to expand their container trade to the detriment of Liverpool.  Liverpool settled it by giving the government the money back.  Southampton claim to be the port for London, which is a little far fetched.  However people who have used it report that it is efficient.
